Marine Gunnery Sergeant John David Fry Scholarship

Sabio is proud to support our troops and help elevate our veterans careers as they enter civilian life. We take a variety of VA benefits including, VRRAP, VETTEC, Chapter 33, VR&E, Skillbridge Program, VA Education benefits and also the FRY SCHOLARSHIP.

What is the Fry scholarship?

This scholarship was created in honor of Marine Gunnery Sgt. John David Fry of Lorena, Texas. In 2006 Sgt. Fry had only one week left in his Iraq tour and injured his hand. He was given the option of being able to return home early with a Bronze Star. Fry declined and volunteered to go on one last run where he was killed by an explosive device, leaving behind his widow and three small children.

The Marine Gunnery Sgt. John David Fry Scholarship provides GI Bill benefits to surviving spouses and children of service members who died in the line of duty after Sep 10, 2001. Now, like post 9/11 veterans, eligible surviving spouses and children attending school can receive almost the same benefits as the Post-9/11 GI Bill, (Chapter 33.)

What does the Fry scholarship include?

  • 36 months of 100% benefits
  • Full tuition and fees paid directly to the school for all public school in-state students
  • A monthly housing allowance
  • A books and supplies stipend

Who is eligible?

  • Surviving spouses (can use the fry scholarship for up to 15 years from the anniversary of the service member's death or until they remarry)
  • Children of the service member between the ages of 18 and 33.
